Who am I?

I have been a Consultant Vascular Surgeon since 1996. My areas of interest include venous disease, the management of peripheral arterial disease, leg ulcers and the foot complications of diabetes.

I have considerable experience in the management of venous disease and I offer my patients the full range of interventions for venous disease including endovenous ablation, sclerotherapy (both foam and standard sclerotherapy), mechanochemical ablation and glue closure. I specialise in treating varicose veins under local anaesthetic and I embrace the new techniques in order to offer my patients painless surgery.

I am a recognised specialist in the field of venous disease and I teach my peers on Venous courses including the International Charing Cross Vascular Meeting. I am a member of the Venous Forum – the only specialist body for Venous disease in the UK.

I was an elected member of the Council of the Vascular Society and the Society’s Honorary Secretary until 2022. I also sat on the Specialist Advisory Committee for Vascular Surgery – this body is responsible for the quality of training in Vascular Surgery in the UK. I am an FRCS examiner and I Chair the board of Examiners for Vascular Surgery.

As a result of the increased awareness of the risks of developing a deep vein thrombosis while flying, below knee support socks are now widely available and promoted as “flight socks”. They are available in a wide range of colours and “breathable” materials. However, to achieve symptom control, they do need to be worn all day every day. Class I stockings should give good symptom control for most people with varicose veins. Stronger stockings (Class 2) are only necessary if you have developed skin problems or you have had an ulcer which has healed. A trail of compression socks can be useful to see if they help your symptoms. If they don’t, it is likely you have another problem causing your leg symptoms.
